It's time to branch out!

Confession:

I used to think God's word was too rich to understand. Intimidated time and time again by the Bible's depth and breadth of knowledge, I'd often neglect or abandon spending time in God's word altogether. That was until I read this scripture:

"Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God." (Luke 8:11 KJV)

I'd heard and read this parable many times, but it never fully resonated with me until I stopped and thought about it a bit more...

Can't see the forest through the trees.

God's word isn't a thickly lined forest blocking out the rays of light (our ability to view Christ) nor is it one densely packed with trees so high we dare not climb them. His word is a seed.

A single seed, if placed in the right conditions, can grow thousands of times its size. It can be a bearer of fruit, a home for animals or even a source of strength.

Same as one seed that is planted in our hearts. If nurtured, it grows into a vine. And not just any vine: the true vine! God's word has a purpose in our lives and that's to yield the fruits of the spirit (love, joy and peace to name a few)! Thankfully, to connect to this true vine is simpler than you may think.

John 15 says, "I am the true vine... Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit..."

God is the vine, meaning the foundation of life. From just a single seed of His word, He becomes our very being. He is the source of all our needs and the supplier where we lack. All it takes is a single seed, or scripture for His word to come to life and for us to connect our lives to Christ's.

So where do we actually fit in to this parable? How do we learn to tackle what's seems like an innumerable task?

Verse 2-5 of John 15 continues on to explain:

"Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you... I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing."

A single seed connects us to the vine and as we nourish it, our faith grows, our reach expands and we become more dependent on God's resources to bear fruit! That also means as our branches grow wide and stronger we increase the ability to others see Christ! That's why we must stay steadfast and consistent in our walk with Christ to reach so many looking for His love and light.

So what's missing?

Sometimes we find ourselves approaching the Bible as if we are looking up at a canopy, lost in the forest. However, God wants us to be apart of the vine and become His branches! It's time for us to stop hiding behind our excuses for not seeking Him dutifully.

"I don't have enough time."

"It all just seems so complicated."

"What's in it for me?"

Instead, choose to begin faithfully studying His word and letting His seeds be planted one by one, scripture by scripture. Let your wisdom and knowledge grow according to God's will. Let your focus turn from serving self to serving others. We are the branches and...
